Sometimes first aid isn’t a bandage or CPR or calling 911. Sometimes first aid is YOU.
You are more likely to encounter someone in an emotional or mental crisis than someone having a heart attack. Learn an action plan to help at Youth Mental Health First Aid, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at Lake Regional Hospital.
Youth Mental Health First Aid programming focuses on how to recognize signs of psychological issues, addiction challenges or other crises in adolescents (ages 12 to 18). This program is designed for parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens. Amy Bartels, a human development and family science field specialist from MU Extension in Camden County, will lead the class.
Participants in the eight-hour course become certified as Mental Health First Aiders for Youth. They learn a five-step action plan to help adolescents in crisis and in non-crisis situations connect with appropriate professional, peer, social and self-help care. Topics include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.
The course is designed for adults who regularly interact with adolescents, but it is also open to adolescents 16 years old and older. The training costs $25. Registration is required. Call MU Extension at 573-346-2644 to register and for more information.
Lake Regional offers a variety of educational programming throughout the year, including health talks on arthritis, diabetes, heart attack and stroke. Several health fairs and screenings also are held annually throughout the lake area. For information on upcoming events, visit www.lakeregional.com/events.
